The Daughters of the Moon trilogy arrives in Colombian theatres

After a successful run through national and international festivals, the documentary trilogy Daughters of the Moon, directed by David Herrera, begins its theatrical release across the country. Screenings will take place at venues such as the Cinemateca de Bogotá, Procinal Las Américas in Medellín, the Museum of Modern Art of Medellín (MAMM), the Cinemateca del Caribe in Barranquilla and the Cinemateca La Tertulia in Cali.
Made up of three films shot in Indigenous communities, the trilogy presents stories of leadership, resistance and female spirituality with an intimate, ethnographic approach. The releases are staggered: Mother (Mûpã) — August 14, 2025; Woman of Dreams (Ouutsü) — September 18, 2025; Spirit of the Forest (Wakani) — October 16, 2025.
Mother (Mûpã)
The disappearance of a 13-year-old Embera girl, forced to marry a teacher, awakens the maternal instinct of Morelia and drives her to use her influence as governor to find her. Shot in the Embera language and subtitled in Spanish, it blends drama and ethnographic portrait. Festivals: DocsMX (Mexico City), MIDBO (Bogotá), FICDEH, PACCPA — Panorama du Cinéma Colombien Paris, and the Wallmapu International Indigenous Film Festival.
Woman of Dreams (Ouutsü)
In the La Guajira desert, Virginia, a young Wayúu woman, follows dreams that push her to travel with her mother. Between visions of her late grandmother and the desire to become a leader of her community, she faces the clash between tradition and personal aspirations. Filmed in Wayuunaiki with Spanish subtitles, it mixes the coming-of-age with the ethnographic register. Festival: FICCI — Cartagena de Indias International Film Festival.
Spirit of the Forest (Wakani)
Adriana Samboní, a defender of traditional medicine, receives what she interprets as a message from the Yagé that could change her life. The visions intertwine with the memory of the Mocoa landslide, which left more than 300 victims. Shot in Spanish, it is an experimental, symbolic tale. Festivals: Chiledoc Conecta and Premios TAL.
